Three white Navien tankless water heaters mounted side by side on a wall, each with its own PVC intake and exhaust vent through the ceiling, copper gas and water piping with yellow-handled valves below, and two condensate neutralizer cartridges on the drain lines

Recent job

Bank of three Navien tankless water heaters

  • Three Navien condensing tankless units working together for high hot water demand
  • Each unit on its own PVC intake and exhaust venting through the ceiling
  • Recirculation piping so hot water reaches the fixtures fast
  • Gas line sized for all three units firing at once, with isolation valves
  • Condensate neutralizer cartridges on the drain lines, as condensing units require

Linking tankless units means hot water never runs out, even with many showers running at once. When demand is low, only one unit fires, which saves gas.

White Navien wall-mounted condensing boiler with its control panel reading 158°F, new copper piping with yellow-handled shutoff valves, a brass air separator, a circulator pump and a grey expansion tank below

Recent job

Navien high-efficiency wall-hung boiler installation

  • Navien condensing boiler, Energy Star rated, mounted on the wall to free floor space
  • New copper piping with isolation valves on every line
  • Strainer and air separator to protect the boiler
  • Circulator pumps and expansion tank on the heating loop, piped for separate zones
  • Started up and set to 158°F supply temperature

A condensing boiler recovers heat that an older boiler sends up the chimney, so it uses less gas for the same warmth. Zoning lets each area of the house run on its own thermostat.

Recent job

Gas boiler installation with an indirect hot water tank

  • New gas boiler set on a raised base
  • New copper near-boiler piping and valves
  • Expansion tank sized for the heating loop
  • Flue liner connected for venting
  • Indirect hot water tank piped to the boiler, with its own zone control

An indirect tank heats domestic water with the boiler instead of a separate burner, so the house gets plenty of hot water from one efficient heat source.

Three Honeywell zone valves labeled 1 FL, 2 FL and 3 FL on a horizontal heating header, a brass Supervent air separator above them, a Taco zone control panel on the wall to the right, and a grey Amtrol Extrol expansion tank below

Recent job

Three-zone heating controls for a three-family house

  • Three Honeywell zone valves, one per floor, so each apartment has its own thermostat
  • Taco zone control panel wired to all three valves
  • Supervent air separator to keep air out of the heating loop
  • Amtrol Extrol expansion tank on the boiler system
  • New transformer and low-voltage wiring for the controls

In a multi-family house, zoning means a tenant on the third floor is not freezing while the first floor is overheated. Each floor calls for heat on its own.

Common questions

Does maintenance really extend the life of a boiler, water heater or expansion tank?

Yes, measurably. A boiler that is cleaned and combustion-tested every year commonly reaches 20 to 25 years; one that is never serviced often fails at 12 to 15. A tank water heater that is flushed yearly and has its anode rod checked reaches its 10 to 12 year design life instead of failing at 6 or 7. An expansion tank is checked for correct air charge each visit and replaced when waterlogged, which protects the boiler, the water heater and the relief valve from pressure damage. Clearing scale and sediment also keeps water flow and pressure where they should be.

What can I do before winter to reduce the risk of heating equipment failure?

Have the boiler serviced before October 1: burners cleaned, combustion tested, safety controls tested, expansion tank and system pressure checked, and on steam boilers the low-water cutoff flushed and vents checked. Replace thermostat and carbon monoxide alarm batteries. Flush the water heater and test its relief valve. Bleed radiators, insulate pipes in unheated spaces, shut off and drain outdoor spigots, and clear the vent terminations outside. Our winter heating maintenance checklist walks through every step.

Is there a 24-hour plumber for boiler repair in NYC?

Yes. GW Mechanical Corp answers calls 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for boiler repair, hot water tank replacement and sewer backups in Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and Manhattan. A dispatcher, not a voicemail, picks up at 646-980-2411.

Can you replace my hot water tank today?

In most cases, yes. We carry 40, 50 and 75 gallon tanks and expansion tanks on our trucks, so a standard replacement is usually finished the same day, in 2 to 3 hours once we arrive.

What does no heat or no hot water mean for a NYC landlord?

Both are HPD Class C, immediately hazardous violations. Heat is required from October 1 to May 31 and hot water at 120°F all year. Owners must restore service within 24 hours, and daily penalties apply until it is corrected.

Which areas do you serve?

Every neighborhood in Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and Manhattan. We do not currently serve the Bronx.

Do you give a price before starting work?

Yes. After diagnosing the problem, the plumber gives you a written estimate. Work starts only after you approve it.
